Why Dogs Get Sick

When people get sick, what is one of the first things that doctors look at? Typically, they're going to look at our diet and if we've eaten something we shouldn't have. Or, they're going to look at what we do eat on a regular basis and see if we're getting enough of the vital nutrients we need to maintain our health.

When dogs get sick, what do we do? We take them to the vet and we may attribute the disease to fleas, ticks or to some virus they must have picked up from the neighbor's dog. Rarely do we look at the ingredients in their dog food and rarely do we consider that the dog food we have been feeding them since puppies could be the cause of this sudden skin allergy or other ailment.

Before we get in depth as to why dogs get sick, we need to look at the various reasons we don't get sick. We eat a variety of different foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner and many of us take vitamins every morning to ensure we're getting all of the nutrients that our diets can't provide. What we do is we prevent ourselves from becoming ill to the best of our abilities, but many people do not do this for their pets. They simply fill up the water bowl and dump a cup of dog food in a bowl. That's it. Sure, many dogs can live years on this diet, but it doesn't mean that they're living happy and healthy.

We maintain our health with proper nutrition and exercise. Many owners do not pay as much attention to the health of their dogs as they do their own and you can only imagine the health of the dogs that have owners who don't even care about their own health. It is this lack of prevention that causes thousands of dogs to come down with cancer and a variety of serious health effects each and every year and causes many dogs to be put to sleep simply because of a lack of a healthy diet.

Disease has always been a mystery to humans. Our society as a whole is riddled with a variety of different diseases, many of which have turned to cancer. Many people spend their entire medical careers researching these diseases and trying to determine exactly what is causing us to get sick. The same is true for animals. Veterinarians and researchers have spent countless years diagnosing dogs with illnesses, giving that disease a name and coming up with a vaccination to prevent it.

The problem is that we can't talk to dogs and we don't know the exact way that dog feels when he is sick. Unlike people, you can talk to a dog and ask him the symptoms he's feeling, we have to look at him, poke and prod to determine exactly what symptoms are apparent so that we can try to diagnose a disease.

• Achy joints
• Diarrhea

• Fevers

Unfortunately, these very same symptoms are the same symptoms for just about every dog that comes down with an illness, no matter which illness it is! We know that something is wrong, but we just don't know for sure because our dogs can't explain it to us like we can to our doctor.

So, what do we do? We take them to the vet and he tries a steroid shot. That might work for a little bit, but it just doesn't cure it so he tries an antibiotic. Again, helped for a few days, but it just didn't do the trick. Veterinary medicine is almost a trial and error process and hopefully something will give and the dog gets better. Of course, some conditions are much easier to diagnose because we can do fecals, blood tests, x-rays and other tests, but our poor little pups are little furry pin cushions until we finally figure out what is wrong.
