Your Dog's Natural Healing Process
As the body flairs up to fight the virus or bacteria, the skin may become inflamed or you may run a fever. This is a sign that the immune system is working to fight off the "bug." So, the dog may exhibit a skin reaction of some sort, as the body frequently uses the skin as a method of expelling toxins. However, when we see this occurring, we try to treat the symptoms, reduce the inflammation with drugs instead of allowing the body to heal itself.
Many vets simply treat this situation as inflammation of the skin, give the dog a cortisone shot or a round of antibiotics for a bacterial infection. The problem with this type of thinking is that the drugs suppress the immune system and the dog retains the toxicity of the drugs as well as the root cause of the condition. Later, this same type of inflammation might show up on the dog's legs or stomach. It might even show up internally or in the ears. Either way, when we immediately give our dogs drugs such as these, we're not treating the problem at its root and only causing it change and move through the body.
Just as the will to fight a disease has played a role in people fighting cancer, the same is true for dogs. If they have a happy home life and lifestyle, they may be much more willing to fight through any disease or condition they may develop than if they are the dog that just happens to live in your backyard. There are diseases that have been spread genetically or the dogs have a genetic propensity to develop these diseases. This does not necessarily mean that the dog's parents or grandparents had these issues, as over time, several conditions begin to present themselves that previous generations may have not exhibited. For instance, genetic damage may have occurred in a puppy because the mother was treated with antibiotics while pregnant or she may have been exposed to some sort of toxic chemical. This may have caused a genetic mutation in one or all of her puppies. There are a number of environmental and genetic reasons that these mutations may occur and although we don't fully understand all of the genetic effects, we do know that chemicals and other environmental toxins can have these effects and, unfortunately, many of them may be passed down through the breed due to irresponsible breeding practices. Almost all pure bred dogs are subject to genetic weaknesses that can leave them open to disease. It's important to keep your dog's immune system healthy and strong.
